Describing Data Using Measures of Central Tendency and Range
Online
NLVM: Box Plot / Histogram
The NLVM: Box Plot / Histogram allows for the user to visual a series of data. The region just below the Box Plot / Histogram shows both the Median and the Mean (it is labeled Average). Customizable features include personal sets of data, Box Plot or Histogram view, and slider controls for the cell width in the Histogram.
Illuminations: Mean & Median
The Illuminations: Mean & Median tool is essentially a number line that calculates the Mean and Median of set of numbers. The set of numbers can be created by either dragging and dropping the red ball to various places on the number line, or entering individual numbers into the boxes located below the number line. As more numbers are added, the Mean and Median values change accordingly. Up to three number lines can be activated at one time. The Sort button organizes the data in numerical order.
Shodor Interactive: PlopIt
The Shodor Interactive: PlopIt tool looks similar to a bar chart. The X-axis represents a range of numbers, but the Y-axis represents instances of those numbers. A series of numbers can be entered into the data area, and when the graph is updated, the chart area is populated with blocks to represent the data elements. It is very simple, visually, to see how often a number occurred. If the options are selected, the Mean, Median, and Mode are indicated below as a guide, pointing to their corresponding values on the X-axis number line.
Shodor Interactive: Stem and Leaf Plotter
The Stem & Leaf plotter is an excellent tool to "organize data by place value to compare data frequencies." Customizable features include Title, as well as Vertical or Horizontal-style plots. Also has the ability to calculate the Mean, Median, and Mode(s).

InspireData (Win/Mac)
InspireData is a graphically rich, manipulatable environment in which to explore data. Data can be represented in a standard table form, or you can watch the data come alive using the Venn Diagram, Stack, Axis, or Pie Plots. Data collection is simple as well, with the use of the Survey tool or by importing data from an existing database. Version 1.5 allows the posting of e-Surveys online to collect data from a computer with Internet Access.
